One of the grandest buildings in Kursk is the House of Officers which is a red building with beautifully elaborate white carved window frames and decorative features. It was built in 1877 but heavily damaged during the Nazi occupation of Kursk and subsequently rebuilt. Since 1994 the House of Officers has been home to the city's planetarium which was founded in 1956.
