Regional Museum

Makariev’s Regional Museum was opened in 1959 and was previously located in St Nicholas’ Gate-Church and St Macarius’ Church of the Makariev-Unzhensky Monastery. Upon the monastery being returned to the Church, the museum relocated to a nearby, early 19th-century estate house which was once used as a public office. The museum has exhibits on the area’s nature and history and is run as a branch of the Kostroma Museum Reserve. It also has information on the Unzhlag Gulag camp which was once located nearby.
