Today, 15 July 2015, marks the 775th anniversary of one of Russia's most celebrated battles - the Battle of the Neva. Following the destruction unleashed on Rus by the Mongol-Tatar Invasion, the Swedish saw an opportunity to take advantage of the situation and invaded Novgorod territory. At the time, Novgorod was run by the teenage son of Grand Prince Yaroslav II - Aleksandr Yaroslavich.

Winners of The Best Of Russia photograph competition

Northern Lights, Republic of Komi - Alexander Fedorov

The project Best of Russia was organised in 2008 by the Vinzavod Centre for Modern Art and covers all regions of Russia. Any citizen of the country with a love of photography, both professionals and amateurs, can take part in the annual competition. The only other condition is that the photo must have been taken in Russia. The winning photos are those which show Russia as her citizens see it.

200th anniversary of Mikhail Lermontov.

Re-establishment of the Kremlin's Chudov and Voznesensky Monasteries

A planned reconstruction of the Kremlin will see government officials moving out, although the famous sight will remain the official residence of the Russian president.  Last week President Putin proposed the re-establishment of the Kremlin's Chudov and Voznesensky Monasteries, which were destroyed by the Bolsheviks.
