Exaltation of the Cross Cossack Cathedral

The Exaltation of the Cross Cossack Cathedral started its life as a wooden church dedicated to the Resurrection of St John the Baptist which was built between 1710 and 1712 for the local population of coachmen. By the 1740s there were calls to build a new stone church here and work was completed in 1751. The new baroque-style church was dedicated to the Exaltation of the Cross. In 1938 the church was closed, but was reopened after the fall of the Soviet Union. In 2000 it was transferred to St Petersburg Cossack Community and it became a cathedral and referred to as the Cossack Cathedral.

Our Lady of Tikhvin Church

Immediately behind the Exaltation of the Cross Cossack Cathedral is the smaller and plainer Our Lady of Tikhvin Church which was built between 1764 and 1768 and subsequently enlarged between 1842 and 1844. Like the cathedral it too was closed during the Soviet period. It later served as a boiler house and a restoration workshop before being restored and reopened.

Bell Tower

The final building in the church ensemble of the Exaltation of the Cross Cossack Cathedral is the baroque bell tower which was built between 1810 and 1812. It stands in front of the cathedral and also incorporates a semi-circular colonnade. In 1872 Ss Cyril and Methodius' Church was opened inside of the bell tower.
