Saratov Region

  The Saratov Region is located in the south-eastern part of European Russia.  Its shares a border with the Volgograd, Voronezh, Tambov, Penza, Samara, Ulyanovsk and Orenburg Regions, as well as with Kazakhstan.

 The administrative centre of the region is Saratov, which is located on the Volga. On the other side of the Volga from Saratov is the city of Engels, which is connected to Saratov via the Saratovsky Bridge, which was the longest bridge in Europe when opened.  After his historic first flight in space, Yuri Gagarin landed just outside of Engels and today a special memorial to mark the spot.

 Located on the Volga within the region is a cliff which has become known as Stepan Razin’s Cliff.  As well as being one of the most stunning natural sights in the region, there are also many interesting legends connected with the area.
