Central Naval Museum

Central Naval Museum

The Central Naval Museum is one of the largest naval history museums in the world and one of the oldest having been founded as a depository for shipbuilding models and plans in 1709 by Peter the Great.  In 1805 this depository became the Naval Museum, which in turn became the Central Naval Museum in 1939.  Previously the museum was housed in the former Stock Exchange building on Vasilievsky Island, but in 2011 it moved to its present day location in the Kryukovy Naval Barracks.

The museum consists of several halls with display detailing the history of the Imperial, Soviet and Russian naval fleet. Included among the displays are Peter the Great's boat, a WWI-era submarine, various models of boats, naval weapons and many other naval artefacts.
