St Irinarchus Monument

St Irinarchus Monument

There are two statues by the famous sculptor Zurab Tsereteli in Borisoglebsky. One was unveiled in 2006 and is of St Irinarchus (Irinarkh) the Hermit. Irinarchus was born in 1547 and spent the first 30 years of his life as a merchant before he decided to give up his worldly possessions to become a hermit in a specially built monastic cell in the Borisoglebsky Monastery. Over time he became well known for his great holy deeds living a life in virtual solitude burdened by wearing heavy chains, crosses and fetters.
